Gilbert “Gil” Roland Cabrera passed away January 26, 2022, at his home in Norwalk, CA with his brother Ricky and niece Jackie at his side. Gilbert’s 56 years of life were lived to the fullest.
Gil was an avid fisherman. He had enough fishing equipment and tackle to equip a small town. He was constantly building lures out of something unique and strange. Often, he’d re-string his fishing pole, tie a sock to the end of it, and ask a niece or nephew to pull and run with it to test line and knot strength. He rigged a float tube for multiple fishing poles and took it fishing – in the ocean! When he wasn’t with his family, he was with his friends on the water.
There are too few words that could adequately describe Gil’s life and how much he contributed to those around him. He purpose-built his life around giving to others. He was the gravity which held his family’s orbit; an amazing brother, fatherly uncle, and reliable friend. Gil was the person you could depend on for anything -- no matter how far away, the time of day, the subject – he was there.
All of that said, Gil would have had choice words for us if we spent too much time talking about his accomplishments or our feelings. Instead, he would want us to be together, stay strong, and move forward as a united family. We will – always with Gil in our memories.
Gil lives on in his brother Ricky; sister Dena; nieces Danielle, Jackie, Yvette, Monica, Isabel, Cynthia, Rita, and Raquel; and nephews Gabriel, Chris, Edgar Jr., and Jonathan.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of Gil to the Coastal Conservation Association of California at https://ccacalifornia.org.
